Olukai Ho’olaule’a 2014

Yes, it is that time of the year again.  Hopefully the gods prevailed this year with good winds and prevailing surf for the most classic open water event of the year.  If you are into stand up paddling, outrigger canoeing or Hawaiiana then Maui is the place to be at this time every year.  Olukai (www.olukai.com) goes out of their way every year to make this a classic event.

This year’s Olukai Aloha Award Ukulele goes to Ralph Gotoh.  Ralph will be retiring this year after many years of service for the Hawaiian Lifeguards Association.

This ukulele is made from Koa, of course, and has a classic laser etch petroglyph on the back.  Binding is Koa

with vintage-style purfling.  Neck is African Mahogany while fretboard and bridge are Macassar Ebony.  Accents are Hawaiian Mango.  I think that I decided on PHD low “G” for strings to bring out the warmth of the Koa.

Aloha you all!
