Fresh, Curly Koa Tenor Ukulele 2016
Ok, the holidays are over and it’s past time that I get back on the horse. I’m starting off 2016 with an all Koa tenor ukulele.
This premium Koa selection was obtained from Allied Lutherie and is salvaged, old growth wood from the Big Island. I think you will agree that the color and curl of this wood is just short of spectacular. I left all the accents simple just so that the wood would be properly showcased. The accent Koa is from the island of Kauai. The neck is also solid Koa and the binding is India Rosewood.
Also provided by Allied Lutherie is the Amazon Rosewood for fretboard and bridge–this wood was just too special not to be used.
The sound of this instrument is, in my opinion, is excellent. This particular set of Koa is a little more dense than some and provides a brightness, even with the low “G” stringing, that is not provided by lower density stock. The volume of the instrument (3 1/8″ in the lower bout) still gives it a big sound and plenty of sustain.
I still have three more sets of this beautiful Koa in tenor size. This particular instrument can be seen at Hale Ukulele in San Diego if you happen to be in town.
