Vertical scratch Alaskan spruce

Unless a standard concert scale is requested, all of my concert sized instruments this year will have a 17″ tenor scale as well as 15 frets to the body.  The 17″ scale is not out of proportion with the body and provides better string tension, tonality and playability–at least, in my opinion.

I just have a Bubinga thing going at the moment.  This particular wood I obtained at local hardwood supplier Tropical Exotic Hardwoods  in Carlsbad California.  Bubinga has a natural reddish hue and is fairly heavy and dense but with a good tap tone.  My client opted for a reclaimed Alaskan “vertical scratch” bearclaw sitka spruce sound board–a wise choice and an elegant look for sure.

This ukulele has red and black accents.   The neck wood is old growth, reclaimed redwood from Northern California.

Reclaimed redwood neck

This concert ukulele has a low “G” tuning so I am using  Pepe Romero’s tenor low “G”set but a Thomastik Cf27 flat wound string for the “C”.  The result is an instrument providing a very clear and bright sound but with more sustain than I would have expected from such a small instrument.
