It’s All About The Woods

Body:  curly Claro Walnut.  I’ve built quite a number of instruments using claro walnut and this is just another example of the variety and beauty of this reclaimed wood.  It is of moderate density and warm in tone.

Sound Board:  a specific request was made for a “not white” sound board.  The final decision was this Alaskan “Earthtone” Cedar.  This is a reclaimed wood as well–weathered, soaked in water, aged.  It is not as soft as new western red cedar.  It has quite a brilliant tap tone with good sustain where new western red cedar is warmer with good sustain.  It is stiffer than new western red cedar as well so bracing is very light.

And

I’d consider this to be a no frills build–just some nice wood with some complimentary accents.  Tonally, I find this one to be a bit brighter than my usual warmish voicing.  I attribute this to the earthtone cedar top and not to bracing.  The usual sustain and volume is still there and I expect the top to open up rapidly. Man, I love a Curly Walnut Custom Ukulele.
