Krinkle Curl Koa Custom Ukulele - Sold
My current fave is this Krinkle Curl Koa Custom Ukulele. This is a standard tenor.
It’s All About The Woods
Body: I just can’t get enough of this blond, krinkle curl Koa. This came to me as a concert sized set but I really wanted tenor. To resolve this issue I used offcuts to expand the back to tenor size. A wedgie for the back and the lower bout graft to match. I love krinkle curl koa; and, I love this blond sap wood. You just don’t see this every day for sure.
Sound Board: keeping with traditional look I used Swiss Moon Spruce. It’s got a little lightning strike bearclaw look as well.
Binding: chocolate brown curly Koa with blue/blue purfling accents. The sound hole rosette is paua abalone.
Neck: to match the binding I selected a very old piece of California Claro Walnut. Internal carbon truss rod and epoxy finish sanded to 4000gt.
Fret Board and Bridge: I used my last piece of stabilized Satin Wood Burl–good color match with the body woods.
The Rest Of The Build
Tuners: Gotoh UPT.
Strings: Romero high “G”.
Nut and Saddle: unbleached bone.
Fret Markers: white MOP.
Case: Crossrock ABS.
And
To be honest I expected my typical warmish sound but was surprised with a bright, focused sound possibly more typical of a traditional ukulele. Of course the high “G” tuning complimented that characteristic. When I build these instruments I try my best to let the woods speak for themselves and not the bracing. Each set is going to have slightly different qualities that require different thickness and bracing combinations. Sometimes you just never know. Although, time and playing will “open” this instrument up I expect it to retain it’s bright qualities with a bit more depth. Seems like they all do. What a looker, what a sound with this Krinkle Curl Koa Custom Ukulele.
