Makau Koa Tenor Ukulele
Here’s a new Makau Koa Tenor Ukulele just delivered before a short summer break. A local ukulele artist wanted Koa, Blue Paua Abalone purfling and rosette along with an Abalone Turtle and White Mother-of-pearl Makau on the fret board–check, check and double check.
I used a combination of compression curl Koa from Kauai and Curly Koa from the Big Island of Hawaii for the sides back and top.
The neck is solid Koa with the usual carbon fiber truss rod.
The fret board and bridge are India Ebony.
The amplification is by Mi-Si. This Simple Jack Uke pickup is version 5, and seems to have better clarity and more volume than it’s predecessors.
We’re trying D’Addario Nyltek strings by Aquila but with a smooth, brass wound low “G”. It’s pretty spunky and really shows well for the crowds!
