Burl and Cedar Concert Ukulele - Custom Build-Sold
By request, here is a Burl and Cedar Concert Ukulele. Let the fun factor never stop!
It’s all about the woods.
Back and Sides: Another set of Australian Brown Mallee Burl.
Sound Board: Western Red Cedar. To compliment the tone of this wood I used a lower density bracing of Alaskan Sitka Spruce–good choice.
Fret Board and Bridge: This is another example of Thuja Burl. Stabilized and sealed with acrylic to improve the color and surface hardness. Not radiused but bound. This is a standard 14.70″ concert scale.
Neck: Honduran Mahogany with carbon truss rod.
Accent Woods: Thuja burl and Indonesian Amboyna burl.
Binding: just plain ‘ol ebony.
Nut and Saddle: brown stained bone.
The rest of the build.
Tuners: Gotoh UPT.
Head Stock face plate: a combination of red Mallee Burl and black epoxy.
Strings: Pepe Romero flourocarbon with wound low “G”. Not too heavy for this instrument. The slightly heavier E/A add just a touch of tension.
Case: Crossrock ABS–the standard.
And.
I was pleasantly surprised. This little instrument has a lot of voice. I’m not a big fan of this scale length so have built most of my concerts the last few years with a tenor 17″ scale and 15 frets to the body. The burl woods don’t have a lot of voice so with these instruments I’m really relying on the sound board for tone. I believe that the western red cedar with low density bracing did do the job here. The result is another “never to be duplicated/one-of-a-kind” Burl and Cedar Concert Ukuele.
