It’s All Aout the Woods
Sound Board: Alaskan Sitka Spruce. This is master grade bearclaw figure. This build was actually asked for after I had started it as a spec instrument. The client wanted the double sound hole design. Check! No side port–not necessary.
Just a closer look at some master grade bearclaw figure.
Body: PNW Big Leaf Maple. This is actually the second instrument I’ve made from this wood. The first one never got posted. Can you believe all the fun figure and color in this set?
Crazy figured PNW big leaf maple.
Neck: really old Claro Walnut. Internal carbon truss rod.

Binding: fiddleback curl claro walnut with maple/black fiber purfling.
Fret Board and Bridge: Got your Brazilian Rosewood here. Radiused and 1.5″ at the nut per request.

Accent Woods: Mappa Burl.
Tuners: Gotoh UPT.
Amplification: Mi-Si.
Fiddleback curl claro walnut binding and accents.
Nut and Saddle: unbleached bone.
Fret Board Markers: white MOP.
Inlay: Orca in white and black MOP.
Orca Inlay in B?W MOP.
Pick Guard: matching Maple. This is a custom request. Not your typical sound hole design so this is my suggestion. Client can install if approved.

And
Overall I like this instrument and like the sound–you don’t miss the side port at all with the upper sound hole placement. The bright sitka spruce goes will with the maple for tonal quality. The client plays a variety of slack-key tunings so I set the action to accommodate even those with the least amount of tension. You don’t see a Bearclaw Baritone Custom Ukulele at the kanikapila very often.
