Pernambuco Redwood Custom Ukulele - Sold
This is a Pernambuco Redwood Custom Ukulele.
It’s All About The Woods
Body: Brazilian Pernambuco. Rarely seen these days because of over forestation, this wood has been harvested extensively as a dye wood and musical instrument wood. It was the most prized wood for violin bows and because of is tonal qualities it is occasionally seen in acoustic instruments. I believe it was a favored wood in Brazil for percussion instruments as well. The pictures don’t do it justice because in sunlight the color changes from orange to pure gold.
Sound Board: color-wise a spruce would have been my first choice but I opted for this Fort Ross Chapel Redwood as an alternative. It has a bright tap tone with good sustain.
Finger Board and Bridge: keeping with the red to orange coloration I opted for this radiused and stabilized Australian Red Mallee Burl.
Neck: Honduran Mahogany with carbon truss rod.
Binding: Honduran Rosewood with black/apricot colored purfling.
Accent Woods: lace Redwood.
The Rest Of The Build
Tuners: Gotoh UPT.
Rosette and Fret Board Markers: gold cultured Opal.
Strings: Pepe Romero, low “G”.
Case: Crossrock ABS.
Nut and Saddle: unbleached bone.
And
A tough build for a lot of reasons, but the end result is pleasing. The redwood top and the reflective back make for a bit of brightness compared with some other combinations. The volume and sustain are good. This definitely is a build that I will not repeat–just the availability of wood is enough of deterrent. I’ve only seen one other ukulele build with pernambuco to date so I guess this will fit into that one-of-a-kind category well. You know, I just had to make a Pernambuco Redwood Custom Ukulele!
