It’s All About The Woods

Body:  Seriously, one of my favorite woods to date is this highly figured, blond Bubinga.  There are tons of names for the figure but I like “paisley” the best.  Don’t expect to see much of this around either.  The tap tone of this wood is not as bright as the usual maroon-red, heartwood Bubinga but it is easier to work which I like a lot.  For fun, I added a combination of back strip materials:  curly koa, curly maple and pomelle sapele.

Sound Board:  To balance the somewhat soft tone of the back I selected this dark red-brown sinker redwood for the sound board.  I just couldn’t resist the tone and sustain of this particular set.  I just wish that the sinker woods finished more uniformly.  It’s a love-hate relationship for sure.

Finger Board and Bridge:  radiused and rare is this Malagasy Rosewood.  This is a true Dalbergia and under severe restrictions.  This was probably imported over 30 years ago by Gilmer Woods/Oregon.    The color is perfect for the redwood top and the tap-tone is rosewood bright.

Accent Woods:  I used a combination of pomelle and curly Sapele and figured Bubinga.  All with blue/white purfling accent.

And

I like it.  Most of my instruments are on the warm side of the sound spectrum said one of my clients.  I’d have to agree and that is by design.  This one might be a touch brighter  with more note focus. That is my initial opinion which could change once the strings are fully set.

Then again, OMG that Bubinga!  What’s not to like about a Figured Bubinga And Sinker Redwood Custom Tenor Ukulele?
