Custom Myrtle Tenor Ukulele - Sold
#2 for 2025 is this Custom Myrtle Tenor Ukulele. This PNW super tenor ukulele is another of my “wood theme” ukulele featuring woods originating from a specific region.
Let The Wood Speak For Itself
Body: Ultra curly Oregon Myrtle Wood. I have rarely seen Myrtle with this tight of curl. It is not unusual for Myrtle to oxidize a bit and turn a bit brownish with time, but I noticed that this piece did not; and, I’ve had it for about 10 years.
Sound Board: Another PNW special. This is the rarish Port Orford Cedar. It exhibits a crisp and clear tap tone and has been the prize of the best of the PNW classical guitar builders or a long time. This quality is rare and especially hard to find. Just try and count the growth rings! Port Orford is a touch on the yellow side I guess–not as pink as spruce or as white as say Moon Spruce or Lutz. It stays that color and has a very fragrant odor.
Neck: Claro walnut. Why not? Internal carbon truss rod, of course!
Finger Board and Bridge: radiused and stabilized Big Leaf Maple Burl. It’s a PNW thing.
Accent woods and Binding: curly Big Leaf Maple with maple/black purfling accents. Head stock backstrap and neck heal are maple burl.
The Rest Of The Build
Tuners: Gotoh UPT.
Strings: Pepe Romero, low “G”.
Nut and Saddle: unbleached bone.
Fret Board Markers: white MOP.
Case: Crossrock ABS.
And
My initial impression is that the tonality is a bit more focused than say with a Koa instrument and a bit brighter I guess–I just got the strings on two days ago. I also have the feeling that the Port Orford is going to open up very quickly so I expect more bass with that development. It already has good sustain with the larger tenor body. So, if you just have to have a PNW special then maybe this Custom Myrtle Tenor Ukulele is for you?
